How to get zzz's away from your bed: Tips for restful travel

We have been traveling a lot over the past few months and have more trips on the horizon. We most recently just got back from visiting the Adirondack region in New York with family. Whether these trips are for work, pleasure, family or a combination of the three, travel can take us out of our night-time routine. As much as I love to travel and wake up in a new place, getting to sleep to begin with can be a challenge. Sometimes I find that I just want my own bed. I had to find ways to get around that feeling and help me sleep better while traveling. Here are a few tips for you to try:

  • Exercise!! It just wouldn't be a Love Vick blog post without mentioning exercise. My first tip is to release some endorphins and get exhausted. The activities can depend on where I am and what's available to me but the goal is to get tired. Hiking kicked my butt on Monday and I slept soundly that night.

  • Try to stay as close to your night-time routine as you can. Go ahead and wash your face, brush your teeth, have a cup of tea, whatever it is you do at home before bed also do while away from home.

  • Bring your own pillow. I know that not every trip allows you the opportunity to bring your own pillow but this tip applies to the times you can. I actually brought my own pillow, mattress topper, blanket and comforter to the cabin we rented in the mountains. It eased my mind to know that I had a fresh clean comforter to plop down on and my own pillow to cuddle with.

  • Get a little help. Som has helped me to relax and get a better night's sleep when nothing else seems to work. It's an all natural sleep aid drink that's just the right treat before bed. Drink Som 15-20 minutes before wanting to fall asleep. I find that it starts to help me very quickly and it's drug free and non habit forming. It's also vegan, gluten free, non GMO and available in sugar free. I prefer the subtle taste of Som zero sugar but, with or without sugar, both taste great.

Wishing you happy dreams and happy travels!

Love, Vick
