How to Start a Blog

January 18, 2018

Someone asked me to do a blog post on 'How to Start a Blog.'  I've only been blogging for 7 months so that doesn't exactly make me an expert but I feel confident enough to share how to start a blog with you.  Firstly, it does not matter what kind of blog you want to start because the basics are the same. Here are five bullet points I've put together to get you started:

  •  Think of a name for your blog- Don't stress deciding on a name because you can always change it.

  •  Find a host- Take a look at Wix, Wordpress or Go Daddy to host your site.  I use Wix which is very user friendly and offers lots of ways to customize your site.

  • Buy a domain name- A custom domain makes it easy for people to find you.  The domain can be as simple as just using your own name (For example, www.lucyricardo.com.  Fun Fact: This domain name is for sale.)  It is also a good idea to use your personal name just incase you want to change the name of your blog, you don't have to change the domain name too.

  • Set up your site- Introduce yourself and tell people what your blog is about.  Customize your blog to show your audience your personality.

  • Blog consistently-  Find a writing schedule that works for you. My recommendation is to post at least once a week at the beginning and then aim to post twice a week.  You can start blogging once your site is setup.

I was so happy to hear that the person who requested this post was thinking about starting a blog.  I think it takes courage to want to take on a project like this because it can be scary and a lot of work but it can be a lot of fun too.  It also shows so much vulnerability and strength at the same time.  It can be difficult to put yourself out there and not know how you'll be received or even perceived.  Remember that it takes time to build an audience so don't give up right away.  This is the stage of blogging that I find myself in now.  Every time I feel discouraged I remind myself of why I started it in the first place and that all good things take time.  Your blog should be powered by passion and authenticity.  It seems like everyone has a blog now and everyone on social media is selling something or they claim to have found the navajo way or they're taking vacations that you'll never be able to afford.  Don't compare yourself to anyone else.  Hold onto your unique voice and that should set you a part from the rest.  There could be a whole audience of people waiting to hear your voice and what you have to say.  I hope this was helpful.  Now go for it, have fun and good luck!
